  • Notes
    • Akron, MI

"Charles junior, the second oldest child now became the breadwinner of the family (father was fighting in the Civil War, older brother Chauncey had left). We are not sure of his age when he first whent to work in the woods, but we know that he was experienced in lumbering by the time he was 14 years of age. Lumbering was the only work available for youngsters who wanted to earn cash." Ruth La Bounty Puffer

"When he grew up Charles, Jr. loved to tell a story about himself and a bear. His only pair of pants needed mending and while his mother mended them he went outside in the woods. Then he saw a bear come out of the woods and go after their only pig. Knowing that the pig was their only source of meat, he ran after the bear and scared him away. The bear must have thought that he was a little bear too. Anyway the pig was saved." Ruth La Bounty Puffer
