  She was born to Cherokee parents on Cherokee land in Tennessee and lived there. Her parents (Uriah Bolton/Lucinda Smith) were well known Cherokee Indians.  Her mother, Lucinda, never formally registered her children as members of the Cherokee Nation when they were forcibly moved (The Trail of Tears) to Oklahoma. Despite overwhelming evidence of her Cherokee lineage, she fought a long and unsuccessful legal battle to become a bona fide member of that Nation. The case files can be viewed on Ancestry.com in the "U.S., Citizenship Case Files in Indian Territory, 1896-1897" case file 040. A modern (2000s) attempt to secure membership into the Cherokee Nation is ongoing by one of the Bolton descendants.
