Rudolph belonged to the elder Welf family and was the s on of Conrad, Count of Auxerre, from whom he inherited the lay abbacy o f St Maurice en Valais, making him the most powerful magnate in Upper B urgundy - present-day western Switzerland and the Franche-Comté.
