Ed. Note: According to my Aunt "Phil" (Philomena Caranci Souza), he came to America (Philadelphia) when my grandfather (Giovanni Carlo) was 3 (1899). He left his family in Italy and he "boarded" with a woman there and had 9 children by her, who all go by 'Caranci'.

There is an entry at Ellis Island for a Giuseppi Carlo Caranci who landed in June 5, 1899 aboard the S.S. Hesperia out of Naples. He was 24 at the time and his last residence was Castelpizzuto, Italy. His final destination was Philadelphia. His brother G. A. Caranci was at the address 1741 South Seventh Street.

Hesperia: Built by D. & W. Henderson & Company, Glasgow, Scotland, 1882. 3,037 gross tons; 340 (bp) feet long; 37 feet wide. Compound engine, single screw. Service speed 11 knots. 760 passengers (760 third class).

Built for Anchor Line, British flag, in 1882 and reverted to Hesperia. Glasgow-New York and Mediterranean-New York service. Also Glasgow-Bombay service. Scrapped in Italy in 1905.

The 1917-18 WWI Draft Registration Card shows him living on Stillwater, Smithfield, RI. His occupation is a mill hand at Centredale Worsted Mills, Stillwater, RI.

According to Ellis Island records, he came to the US on November 5, 1912 aboard the ship SS Berlin. He sailed from Naples on October 25th, 1912 and landed in New York, at Ellis Island. He is listed on the ship's manifest (page 0965 & 0966, on line 15). He was 17 at the time, listed his home as Campobasso, Castelpizzuto, Italy. He was single and his occupation was listed as farmer(?). He could read and write and he listed his nearest relative as his mother, "Mancini, Filomena" who lived in Castelpizzuto. He listed his final destination as RI, Providence. He paid for passage by himself. He had $26 in his possession when he landed. He had never been in the US before and was going to join a relative (cousin ??) at 298 Douglas Avenue in Providence (near Providence College). He answered "no" to being a polygamist and anarchist. He was in good health, was 5'1" tall and had a ruddy complexion. He had brown hair and eyes. He had a scar over his left eye. He lists Campobasso, Castelpizzuto as his place of birth. He also arrives back in the US on Oct 31, 1914 aboard the Patria with his mother, Filomena, he is 17 yo.

Built for North German Lloyd, German flag, in 1909 and named Berlin. Bremerhaven-New York and Mediterranean-New York service. Transferred to German Navy, in 1914. Converted to a minelayer service. Seized by British Admiralty, British flag, in 1919. Troopship by Britain to India service. Under P&O management. Sold to White Star and Dominion Lines, in 1920 and renamed Arabic. Trans-Atlantic service. Chartered by Red Star Line, Belgian flag, in 1926. New York - Plymouth - Cherbourg - Antwerp, then Liverpool to NY service. Refited to 177 cabin, 319 tourist and 823 third cl passengers. Broken up in Italy in 1931.

According to the 1930 census he was living at 64 Eddy Street, Centredale, RI with his wife, Georgiana and children Joseph, Anthony, Philomena and John. He listed his occupation as a fireman in the worsted Mill.

His WWII US Draft registration card lists him as Charles (Carmine) and his date of birth as July 2, 1895 in Castelpizzuto, Italy. His draft serial number was U1747. He was living at 64 Eddy Street, Centredale, RI . He had a telephone, Centredale exchange, 0905 was the number. His employer was Collins and Aikmen Co. in Lymansville, RI, makers of automobile upholstery fabrics.

He came to the US in 1915. He could read and write and speak English and listed his occupation as a laborer on the railroad. The 1930 census has him living in Centredale on Morgan Avenue. He is living with his wife Rose, and daughter Filomena as well as his mother Filomena C. (Mancini). He lists his occupation as a house painter. He lists his immigration year as 1916. In 1950 he's living in Centredale on Eddy Street with his wife Rose (1950 Fed Census).

According to this census his father, Charles, immigrated to the US in 1910 and Georgiana in 1912 and both were naturalized in 1919.

The Census of 1930 shows him living at 64 Eddy Street, North Providence (Centredale), RI, with his parents and siblings, Joseph, Philomena, and John.

According to his daughter, he met his 2nd wife (Agnes Caranci) after his mother suggested he date her after the death of his first wife. They lived one or two streets over and his mother knew the family (Caranci) although they were/are no immediate relation.

John Caranci Sr. was a toolmaker turned spy. He worked for the CIA from 1955 till his retirement. He was credited with inventing innovative ways of spying during the post-war period in Japan and broke up a major spy-ring during that time with the "James Bond" type of spy gadgets he invented and made.

He worked as a plumber with his brother Anthony in North Providence and also at Brown & Sharpe where he learned the tool making trade; Uncas Manufacturing (where he broke his leg playing semi-pro football); and Pratt & Whitney in Providence. When P&W moved to E. Hartford, CT. Uncle Buddy (Charles Boorom) moved with them commuting at first from Providence then moving to Windsor Locks, CT for a short period. Through his brother Joseph, John got a job with the CIA as a tool maker.

He served in the US Army in the Field Artillery 1942-1943; and as a surgical tech in the Medical Corps 1943-1946 during WWII, in the Aleutian Islands (Attu and Shemya) June 1945-Jan 1946. He received the Good Conduct Medal; Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon; American Theater Campaign Ribbon; and the Victory Medal decorations. According to his army records he enlisted as a PVT on October 17, 1942. His term of enlistment was for 5 years or '..for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months,....' . He had 2 years of high school education.

Curiously, John was offered the grounds keeper job at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT before Grampa (Charles French) was, through Carl Storey, who was business manager there. His wife Janet, was sister to Aunt Helen Mason (French), Uncle Stanley's wife.
