- Dr. Puffer attended the common schools in his youth at Dummerston, VT. H e learned the trade of clothier and at the age of 21 went to Three Rive rs, NY to teach school. He decided to study medicine and began under D r. Knapp of Dummerston. He then went to Harvard Medical School. He fi nally began the practice of his profession at Coleraine, MA. After som e years there, he located to Shelburne Falls, MA, where he practiced to t he time of his death in 1877, enjoying a large and lucrative practice a nd achieving great distinction in his work. He was a member of the Mas sachusetts Medical Society and president of the Franklin County Distric t Medical Society. He served on the school committee of the town many y ears and represented his district in the General Court in 1863. In pol itics he was a Whig in early life; later a Republican. He was a member o f the Baptist Church, one of the founders.
He was universally respected and beloved in the community he served so f aithfully. Genial, considerate, generous, tactful, he served all class es equally well. He was tall, commanding in figure, attractive in face a nd features.
