    • WWII Veteran, US Army, Sgt.
      He joined the US Army in January 1942. He attended basic training at Camp Wolters, Mineral Wells, TX. In June 1942, he was sent to the Hawaiian Islands and attended motor mechanics school. He then went to eastern Australia near Rockhampton. He was in the 19th Infantry, 24th Division, which was already overseas when the war began. This was under General MacArthur's command. The next move was to New Guinea and various islands in that area. He returned to the Philippines. Leo took part in the landing on Leyte in October 1944. The remainder of the war was spent in the Philippines. Leo attained the rank of Sergeant. He returned to the states in August of 1945 and received his discharge at Fort Leonardwood, MO. He spent 42 months in the service with 39 of those overseas.
