Mabel, a white heiress, and her black handyman, Arthur Garfield 'Honey' Hazzard planned to marry, but her family found a compliant judge to declare her mentally incompetent, not only breaking the engagement but, conveniently, seizing control of her assets. She owned a cottage on Sandy Pond, Ayer, MA where she stayed during her conflict with family over her marriage plans.
