  He lived in Lancaster, except for one season spent with Caleb Clapp, Greenfield, until he was fourteen years old, when he went to Keene, NH, and learned the trade of cabinet-maker. At the age of twenty he went to Maine, but returned to MA in a short time, worked in Boston and Dorchester in the old chocolate mills of Edmund Baker. He was in partnership with Josiah Gould.
