After the war he entered the employ of A.B. Valentine and about 1889 he organized the Bennington Knitting Company and was treasurer of this company until about eight years before he died. At the time of his death he was connected with the Bennington Wax Paper Company and a director of the Bennington County National Bank.
He was prominent in the Grand Army, past commander of the Vermont Department. He was quartermaster of Custer Post, for ten years. He was a member of Mt. Anthony Lodge; Free Masons; Mt Anthony Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Taft Commandery, Knights Templar, and Walloomsac Lodge, N.E.O.P. He was a gifted musician, both instrumental and vocal, and had charge of the music in various churches in Bennington for many years. He was one of the most prominent citizens of Bennington.
"Mr Puffer has always shown an interest in the welfare of Bennington and was one of the most highly respected citizens of the community. *** Colonel Puffer was one of the best read and thoroughly posted members of the Grand Army in the state. Only recently he compiled and published in the Banner a complete roster of the Bennington troops in the Civil War. He was much interested in the raising of a fund for the building of a memorial hall to commemorate the service of the Bennington soldiers in the great struggle." (Obituary in Bennington Banner.)
