    • In September of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until January of 1946. He was stationed in Newport, R.I. and Bermuda and was honorably discharged with a rank of aviation chief machinist's mate.

      He grew up under the care of his grandmother as his mother died before he was a year old.
