Notes - Family history says he left home at 13 because, as the oldest of 8 children, there wasn't enough food for them all.
He fell in love with the Adirondacks, and soon talked four of his siblings into joining him there. Fred worked as a guide, as commissioner of highways, as one of the founders of the Fulton Chain and Raquette Lake Steamboat Company and worked for W.W. Durant helping build Great Camps. In 1900 he was chosen as fire warden.
