    In 1294 he was excused from the war in Gascony. He fought in the Scott ish Wars from 1303 to 1304. He held the office of Governor of Bristol C astle in 1307. In 1309 he had a grant of the Castle and Manor of Chilh am, Kent. He was created 1st Lord Badlesmere [England by writ] on 26 O ctober 1309. He obtained a grant of the Castle of Leeds, Kent. He hel d the office of Steward of the King's Household. He held the office of G overnor of Skipton Castle in 1314/15, and of all the castles in Yorkshi re and Westmorland. He joined the Earl of Lancaster's rebellion. Hanged as a traitor.

    She was arrested and subsequently imprisoned in the Tower of London for t he duration of a year from November 1321 to November 1322, making her t he first female prisoner in the Tower's history. She was jailed on acco unt of having ordered an armed assault on Isabella of France, Queen con sort of King Edward II of England. Before Margaret had instructed her a rchers to fire upon Isabella and her escort, she had refused the Queen a dmittance to Leeds Castle where her husband, Baron Badlesmere held the p ost of governor, but which was legally the property of Queen Isabella a s part of the latter's dowry. Margaret surrendered the castle on 31 Oct ober 1321 after it was besieged by the King's forces using ballistas. E dward's capture of Leeds Castle was the catalyst which led to the Despe nser War in the Welsh Marches and the north of England. As a result of her marriage, Margaret de Clare was styled as Lady Badl esmere on 26 October 1309. In 1321 she refused the Queen admission to t he Royal Castle of Leeds, leading to the siege and capture of the Castl e. Between 11 November 1321 and 3 November 1322 at Tower of London, Th e City, London, England, she was imprisoned.
