He was the second physician in town, Jeremiah Hall having been the first (see sketch of Dr. Hall), and his practice covered a large territory, extending as far as Hardwick and Royalston, Mass., Westminister, Vt., and Croydon, N.H. His journeys, on horseback, by trails or marked trees, were usually long, and his fees were small, and were usually taken in products of the farm. He had a jocose way of keeping his accounts, sometimes closing them with the entries: "Cancelled in full by poverty;" "Ran a way;" "settled by death;" "Left with Noah Cooke (the lawyer);" and, at long intervals, "Paid in cash to me." He bequeated his saddlebags, vials and lancet to his son, Obadiah, Jr. He died in 1810, aged ninety-two, and was buried in the west yard, on Bradford street.
