    Notes:

    He learned the trade of carriage-making at Belchertown and later became a pattern maker and mechanic.
    He invented and patented, in 1854, the first machine for making envelopes to be built and operated in this country. It was operated by his wife at Rockville, CT and would turn out about 12,000 envelopes in a day. He sold his patent to Cyrus White and Lewis A. Corbin, who afterward admitted to partnership with William H. Prescott, and, under the firm name of White Corbin & Co., they became one of the largest concerns making envelops in this country. The firm became a part of the United States Envelope Co., when consolidation took place, and the factory still continues to do a large business.
    For 25 years Mr. Puffer was superintendent of this factory. In 1873 he retired from active business and went to Stafford Springs, CT to live. In 1892 he and his wife removed to Willamantic, CT where they spent their last years in the home of their daughter.

    He removed to South Brimfield, where he was living in 1795. He previously lived at Medway and afterward at Monson. Documents in the possession of descendants show that he and his wife were of Monson in 1820. Job, Timothy and Elisha Puffer are mentioned in papers dated 1819, and George in 1831. He was commissioned ensign, June 8, 1797, by Gov. Increase Sumner in the 5th regt., 2nd brigade. He was executor of the estate of Joseph Grout in 1835, mentions wife Nancy and children: Elizabeth Ives, Job, William, George, Timothy M., Hopestill (son), and John (H.P. 13 -58). He and wife Nancy deeded to William Puffer the homestead at Monson, Mar 14, 1828 (H.D. 8-201). He was of Medway, Jan 6, 1798, when he bought the Dimmock mill lot at So. Brimfield of Daniel Wight of So. Brimfield and half the grist mill (H.D. 36-718). He conveyed to Jesse Ives with wife Nancy, Oct 3, 1820, the farm on which Ives was living (65-165) . Also to Joel Tucker April 29, 1826, land at Monson, 37 acres.

    He was a soldier in the French and Indian War in Major George Leonard's company, train band list, Apr. 9, 1757; corporal, April 30 to Nov. 25 in the Crown Point Expedition; also in Capt. Simeon Wetherell's company of Norton (list dated April 6, 1757). He served also in the Revolution in Capt. Lemuel Kellock's company, Col. John Smith's regiment, April 19, 1775. He or his son of the same name (of whom nothing is known) served in Capt. Samuel Fisher's company, Major Seth Bullard's regiment, 1780.

    He located in Norton and was selectman of that town. Late in life he removed to Monson.

    He and wife Anna (Metcalf) of Medway deeded to Abel Smith of Holliston land in Brimfield, Apr. 26, 1796 (H.D. 28-720) and to Joseph Partridge land at So. Brimfield, Mch 4, 1796 (H.D. 34-249). He was of Medway Apr. 6, 1791, and May 19, 1792 when he bought land at So. Brimfield of Daniel Wight of Shrewsbury. He was of Medway in 1790, as shown by the census, and in 1792 as shown by papers preserved by the family. He was of Medway, Apr. 30, 1789 when he bought land in Brimfield, 100 acres with house and barns of Elias Underwood (H.D. 29-406).
