"Food and all provisions for the family had to be carried from Watrousville, MI, a journey of 18 miles. While Charles was at war, Margaret had to walk to Watrousville and back carrying on her back what she had purchased. Much of the trail was through swamps. In places she had to walk on logs to get through. Those who remembered her as Grandma Margaret Puffer remember that she walked with a stiff knee. This was the result of a trip one November when she had to spend the night in the woods." : Chauncey, eight, and Charles, six years old, were in charge of the younger brothers and sisters while their Mother was gone. When it came hingh time they would light a candle and put it on a bench in the center of the room and all hover around whiles Charles would tell them stories or they would sing songs to lessen their fears of the wild animals around the cabin. One night they got so scared theyw ent upstairs and called ou the window, "Fire, Murder, Help."
