    He enlisted in Co. C, 7th IL at Springfield, IL, and served through the Civil War. When a lad of ten when he began railroading. He was a locomotive engineer for more than thirty years, and in 1886 lost his left arm in the service of the Santa Fe Railroad Co., at Florence, near Winfield, KS, in a head-on collision. As part of the damages allowed him by the company he was given a concession for a cigar and confectionery stand in the railroad station. Afterward he had a cigar store in Emporia until he died.
