On December 4, 1344 he obtained a Papal mandate for the annulment of hi s marriage to Isabel on the ground of his minority (about 8 at the time o f the marriage) and that he had never consented to the marriage. The Complete Peerage discusses this and states "...Obviously what reall y happened was this. The powerful Earl desired to get rid of the woman t o whom he had been married as a child, and who, since her father's atta inder and execution, had ceased to be of any importance, that he might m arry the woman with whom he was then living in adultery; and the Pope v ery obligingly annulled the marriage and bastardized the issue."
