Notes |
- Folk Figure. Long acclaimed as the first child of European parents to be born in New England. Born the eldest child of noted Mayflower passengers Priscilla Mullins and John Alden in the Plymouth colony (present day Massachusetts). She was described by those who knew her as “a woman of great character, and fine presence, very tall and handsome." She married William Pabodie on December 26, 1644 and settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts where he served as town clerk. The couple had thirteen children before moving to Little Compton, Rhode Island. She died there at about age 94. Among her descendants was the poet most credited with making famous her parents through his work, 'The Courtship of Miles Standish,' Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Her name has also been recorded as Elizabeth Paybody.
