Notes |
- Civil War Veteran, Co. B. 23rd WI Inf. Regt.
Charles' parents death occurred in his early childhood, and he made his home with his uncle Norman Smith (mother Olive's brother), until the time of the Civil War, when he enlisted as a volunteer in 1862. He served three years with Company B of the 23rd Wisconsin regiment, taking part in several major conflicts, including the siege of Vicksburg, and spending three months as a prisoner at Alexandria. He was honorably discharged from service at the close of the war in 1865. He was continuously an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Charles, a pioneer resident of South Dakota, moved from his home in Hitchcock to the convalescent home in Huron when failing health and almost complete blindness necessitated special care and his retirement from business activities. After being in poor health for three years, he passed away there at the age of 89. His funeral held at the Hitchcock Methodist church.
