  He inherited the throne after his brother, George IV, became increasingly ill with mental illness and could no longer perform his royal duties. He was the last king and penultimate monarch of the House of Hanover. Slavery was abolished in virtually all of the United Kingdom during his reign. He had no legitimate children, having a relationship with actress Dorothea Jordan, whom he lived with for 20 years. He was survived by 8 of the ten children he had by her.
