  Civil War, US Navy Veteran, Captain in the Civil War; enlisted Oct 10 1862, Philadelphia, PA resigned March 18 1865. Admitted to the Battle Mountain Sanitarium, US National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Hot Springs, SD in 1912 with asthma and chronic constipation. "Alfred Puffer was a coal heaver on-board the USS Unadilla and USS Princeton, he was not a captain in any sense. He only told his brother Norman he was a Captain as a boast. He was a private (ed. note "seaman") at best. Had no title. His boast was preserved in the "Puffer Genealogy" but is not fact based. He was a story-teller."
