He changed his name to William Roddy Puffer. His career with NASA spanned the pioneering years of America's space program. He joined NASA in 1962 as a security specialist in Houston, while the Manned Spacecraft Center (later renamed Johnson Space Center) was being built. Holder of NASA security credential number 001, Mr. Puffer worked through the early Mercury and Gemini spaceflight programs, culminating in the Apollo program and the landings on the moon. Mr. Puffer served as Chief of Security at Johnson Space Center until 1980, when he transferred to NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. at the beginning of the Space Shuttle program. He retired in 1989 as Director of Security for the agency.
