He died a tragic death at 79, shot and killed in his home in Columbia along with his step daughter's daughter, Glenice Ellingwood, a young mother. His step daughter's estranged husband, Thomas Drinkwater of Bangor, was the killer. The stepdaughter, Alice (Dorr) Drinkwater, 41 in 1948 , then shot and killed her husband to protect her dead daughter's baby and herself. A state trooper, Maynard Lindsay of Harrington, a personal friend of Harley, was seriously wounded at the scene but eventually recovered. Some newspaper accounts said that the baby was Alice's, but I'm pretty sure it was her daughter's. The day after the shootings, the court in Machias quickly cleared Alice of the mandatory charge of manslaughter in the death of her husband.
