    The birth/death dates on his stone don't add up correctly. The stone shows his death date as Jan 2, 1872 and the age at death clearly shows 85 yrs. That would make his birth year 1787, not 1803 as Vermont Vital Records record. Some more research needs to be done on this memorial.

    Enlisted in Company I, Vermont 7th Infantry Regiment on 28 Feb 1862 Promoted to Full Corporal on 13 May 1862 Mustered out on 19 Aug 1862. Died in New Orleans hospital from wounds received in the Battle of New Orleans.

    There are some problems with these records. According to the Vermont Vital Records he has a son Royal R Puffer on 31 Jul 1870 with his 3rd wife Ann Eliza Wilder. Ethan couldn't have died in 1862 of wounds and have a son in 1870. More research needs to be done
