Found his name (spelled McQuown) on a list of petitioners from Rowan Co ., NC along with Georg e Howard. Petition to His Excellency Josiah Mar tin Esquire Governor and Commander in Chief i n and over the Province o f North Carolina asking him to have an amendment of the act of Assem bl y so far as to tolerate the Presbyterian Publication. (Concerning marr ying of the member s of the Presbyterian Church). From Four Generations of McKaughans in America: There are two s tories written or tol d about Hugh's life. One story states that he le ft Phoebe and the children when their twins , Jesse Alfred and Forreste r were small, presumbly to find a better place for them to live . The t wins were born on May 1, 1815. It was told that he went to Tesas to re locate near re latives, prehaps his niece, Jane Mercer Brooks Simpson, d aughter of his sister, Rebecca McKau ghan Brooks. A letter from Archib ald's son, John Wesley McKaughan, to one of his children re lates that t he family heard from his grandfather (Hugh) two or three times in the n ext few ye ars and then no more, so assumed dead around 1820. The other story relates that Hugh was known to have bought land in 1816 i n Pulaski Co., Kentu cky. While there, it is stated that he married Na ncy Riddle in 1820; then moved to Texas t o settle near his niece. Div orces were practically unheard of in this era. If there were gr ounds f or divorce, only the rich and/or influential could afford them. Whethe r or not he eve r legally divorced Phebe or just deserted his family is n ot known. Prehaps if the latter i s true, it wwas just easier for Pheb e to tell her children that their father was dead than t o try to expla in the divorce/desertion. Book 23, page 40: On 11 Sep 1812, Hugh McKaughan -- no wife signs -- l ets John Cecil (both o f Rowan Co., NC) have 75 acres on Rich Fork of A bbott's Creek next Rachel Cecil, Hoseph Alber tson & ---- Collet, for 1 00 pounds, witnessed by John Wayman & Thomas Cecil & proved by the l at ter in Feb 1814. (Said Hugh McKaughan bought this of Sherwood Kennedy) . Hugh reared his family in Guilford Co., NC but went to Texas which port ion was then Mexico . He wrote his son Archibald from Natchitoces, LA o n the border of Texas. A little later wor d was received that he was de ad. In a note from Raymond Peace, editor of "The Descendants of Silas Peace ": In the settling o f the estate of George Whitefield Pope, daughter, P hebe McKaughan, was not taken apart from h er husband as was her sister . This indicates that Hugh McKaughan is deceased. Date is 5 Oc t 1819 . He was on the tax rolls in Texas in 1845 - from Cuz of Sorts by M inniebell McKaughan P erkins From CUZ of Sorts: HUGH McKAUGHAN, named after his Uncle Hugh Mc Kaughan born in Pennsy lvania, went with his parents to what is now Sul livan County, Tennessee after the Revolutiona ry War. He went to Pulas ki County, Kentucky around 1800 with his parents where he was grante d 2 00 acres of land on the East Side of the south fork of the Cumberland R iver. He apparentl y kept his land; but he went to North Carolina wher e he married PHOEBE POPE, 29 March 1804 . Phoebe was born 7 August 178 3 in Pennsylvania, daughter of Rev. George Whitefield Pope an d Mary Ha itt. His marriage bond was co signed by his father-in-law, Rev. George W . Pope, Witn esses James Pope, the bride's brother, and Joab Brooks, br other of his sister Rebecca's husba nd, John D. Brooks. It is possible H ugh and Phoebe knew each other in Pennsylvania before the y moved south . Something happened to the marriage of Hugh McKaughan and Phoebe Pope. W hile I was in North C arolina, I read a letter telling that Hugh went t o the Dominion of Mexico (Texas) to try to g et land near kin (his niec e, Jane Mercer Brooks Simpson), when the twins were a few months ol d ( 1815). He was heard from once only so assumed dead. When we were in P ulaski County, Kent ucky doing research, we found him having his land s urveyed and getting a license to run a saw mill. In 1818, he married P OLLY RIDDLE and then they went to Texas where he was on the tax r olls u ntil 1845. If they heard from him in Texas, it was years after he had l eft North Carol ina. I feel the marriage bond had something to do with i t for it states that if he leaves hi s wife, and there are children inv olved, he would pay the state five hundred pounds, the curr ency of the d ay. Since he was nowhere to be found and since his father-in-law had c o-signed , it looks like he would be the one to pay. It was just easie r for Phoebe to say he had gon e and not heard from rather than he had l eft her. To get married legally in those days, yo u had to get a marri age bond, which meant you had to pay the state a certain amount of mone y t o take care of your children if you left them, in his case, 500 pounds. T his is why commo n law marriages were so popular. After Hugh McKaughan left North Carolina, Phoebe took her children to h er father's farm wher e they built a cabin for her down by the spring. T he foundation is still visible. They alwa ys referred to it as "Widow P hoebe's home" All their children stayed in North Carolina but Re v. Wil liam, my great grandfather.

Rev. William McKaughan/McCoin: born 18 April 1813, Rowan (now Guilford ) County, NC. He marr ied Elizabeth Piggott (Pickett), daughter of Wil liam Piggott and Elizabeth Welborn, 1 Augus t 1833, at Cane Creek, NC. E lizabeth was born 16 August 1814. In 1840, William McKaughan began his training as a Methodist Protestan t minister under the t utelage of the famed Alson Gray. On May 11 1841 , he was given his license to exhort (preach) . On October 28, 1843, h e was made a Deacon. On May 1, 1845, he was given authorization t o be come a circuit rider. On November 14, 1847, he was advanced to an Elde r. On may 22, 185 9, he was sent to Georgia. On February 28, 1864, he w as assigned the Holly Creek and Holly C reek churches in the Georgia di strict. The family lived about twenty miles from Atlanta. During "Sherman's ma rch to the Sea" a ride r on horseback came to inform them that Sherman w as headed their way and burning everything i n sight. Rev. William hur riedly hid his sons in different places on the plantation, in cas e som e were found and killed, the others might be saved. He hid his wife, b abies and daughte rs among the reeds and lily pads at the pond and he t ook his best horse, a horse is very impo rtant to a circuit rider, to a c lump of trees the farthest point from his family and hid fo r he was af raid the horse might whinny and attract the soldiers attention. The so ldiers came , took what they wanted and burned the rest. When they all a gain gathered, no one was hurt b ut about everything they owned was bur ned. Upon investigating, they found the iron frame an d wheels of thei r wagon were usable. They built a flatbed on the frame and it was that f latb ed and that horse Rev. William saved that brought them to Kansas. Rev William homesteaded near North Homer Creek in Greenwood County, Kan sas; however, he was n ot there long enough to clear his deed. Elizabe th, his wife, died 4 April 1869 and is burie d in what is now called th e Worley Cemetery, near North Homer Creek. His oldest daughter, Su san nah, and two older sons: Rev. Alpheus and William Alson, had married by t hen, however, the y followed their parents to KS. Rev. William married a ll the rest of the children but the tw o youngest, Serena and Julius Sp ate, while in Greenwood County. Julius was working away fro m home and s ince Serena was a teenager, after his wife's death, Rev. William did no t feel i t was safe to leave Serena alone while he was on his circuit, s o he transferred to Emporia, K ansas, where one of his older daughters l ived at the time. She would be able to take care o f Serena while he w as gone from home. One of the chapels he was in charge of in Lyon Coun ty , Kansas was the Fowler Chapel, about five miles southeast of Empori a. It was on the John Fo wler farm. John Fowler had a daughter, Sally , who had been widowed twice and had several sma ll children. Rev Will iam McCoin married Sally Fowler Gregory Parker 8 April 1872 in Emporia . H e helped raise her children. Rev. William died in Emporia 2 March 1895 . He is buried be side Sally in the Hunt-Fowler private Cemetery, loca ted on the Fowler farm southeast of Empor ia. His preaching assignment s in KS were: Virgil and Eureka before churches were built, Empo ria Mi ssion, Fowler Chapel, Crystal Plains and Neosho Rapids. We found Rev. William using the spelling McKaughan when doing business a t the courthouses i n North Carolina and Georgia; however, all his prea ching certificates are made out as McCoi n but the first one in Kansas. I t was McCaughan. During the time his first wife died and h e was marry ing his children, he was using the spelling McCaughan. Around 1870, he , and all h is remaining sons excluding Francis Newton, changed their n ames to McCoin.

AT REST DEATH OF A MAN WHO MADE THE WORLD BEITER Rev. William McCoin died at his residence on East Street last Saturday n ight and was buried f rom Fowler Chapel today. This event removes a ve ry exemplary and influential character of lo ng standing, the terminati on of whose career is a matter of more than regret in this communit y. For more than forty years he has been in Kansas and mainly in this imme diate neighborhood. H e was born in North Carolina in 1813. Before co ming to Kansas his active work was in the sou thern states, much of it a s an itinerant in Georgia. About twenty years ago he became connec ted w ith the numerous Fowler families by marriage to Sarah, daughter of the l ate John Fowler , who survives him as his widow. He was the father of t en children, all but two who embrace d Christianity and three of these b ecame ministers of the gospel. At a very impressive funeral service this morning, a record kept in his o wn hand writing, wa s read, showing that his ministry had been instrume ntality of turning more than a thousand so uls from darkness to light. S urely he has lain up for himself incorruptible treasures. Hi s charact er was such as to fairly earn that which he received, the highest estee m of all wh o knew him. The widow and friends are the recipient of the most hearty and tender c onsolations and sympat hy from that appreciation of the dead is shown i n kindness to the living.

REV. Forrester McKaughan was a twin to Jesse Alfred. At times during h is lifetime he spelled his name "McKoin". Information from his Bibles s ays he was a member of the Protestant Church for thirty-five years. Th is would have been the Protestant Methodist Church, which was very popu lar in that area for many years. He then changed to the Christian Chur ch where he was a minister in Guilford County, North Carolina. The chu rch, now gone, was next to what is now the A. and I. Cemetery. Another d enomination built across the road from the cemetery and now uses it . H e and several of his family are buried in this cemetery. On one census , he spelled his name McKoin however later when gravestones were bought , it is spelled McCaughan. Rev. Forrester had been conducting a revival at the Mt Zion Church near P ilot Mountain, NC. As he rose to speak, he died of an apparent heart at tack, 30 September 188 3. Four Generations of McKaughans in America has the death date as 3 0 sep 1888. I have only a couple generations worked out for Rev. Forrester McKaugha n. I understand someone in Kernersville has been working on his line. I h ave through the years written to several McKaughan's of his line in Ker nersville but so far have not had any of them answer so the y must not w ant to share their information. Rev. Forrester McKaughan's Bible left a multitude of information he and o ther members of the family had written down. It is from his Bible that w e found my great-grandfather's, Rev. William McCoin, obituary. Rev. Wi lliam died after Rev. Forrester so someone had added this to the Bible, f or which we are thankful. OTHER INFORMATION FOUIND IN REV. ISAAC HARRISON McKAUGHAN

At the age of eighty, still hale and vigorous, Isaac Harrison McKaughan l ives in the villag e of Kernersville, in Forsyth County. He grew up and h ad his first business experience befor e the war. During the war he ser ved faithfully and loyally as a Confederate Soldier. After th e final s urrender he returned home to take up the threads of civil existence. Mr . McKaughan w as a very prosperous farmer for many years, and still own s a very large and handsome estate.

He was born in Guilford County, North Carolina August 26, 1837. His gra ndfather McKaughan, o f Scotch ancestry, reared his family in Guilford C ounty. In the early years of the last centu ry, he was determined to se ek a home in the new country then opening to American settlers i n that p art of the Dominion of Mexico known as Texas. It was such an adventure a s many pionee rs were willing to engage in at a risk of considerable pe rsonal danger. His son, Archibald, r eceived from him a letter written a t Natchitoches, Louisana, the border of Texas, and soon af terwards the re came a notice to the effect that Hugh McKaughan was dead. Hugh marri ed Phoeb e Pope who survived her husband many years and died at the hom e of her son, Forrester, in Gui lford County. Her six children were nam ed: George, Archibald, William, Forrester, Jesse and J ane.

Archibald McKaughan, father of Isaac H., was born in Guilford County, N orth Carolina, 15 Dece mber 1808. He grew up in country surroundings an d lived in Guilford County until 1839, when h e moved to Stokes County. S ettling near Freidland, now Forsyth County, he became a general fa rmer , and he remained in that county an honored and useful citizen, until h is death in 1879 . He married Mary Welch. She was born in Guilford Coun ty February 3, 1810. Her father, Isaa c Welch, was a native of the same c ounty, and her grandfather, William Welch, was also a farm er who spent h is last years in Guilford County. The Welch settlement is about three o r four m iles from High Point. Isaac Welch, married Martha Paine, who w as probably a life long residen t of Guilford County. Mrs Archibald McK aughan died January 26, 1877. Her six children were: W illiam, Isaac H. , Richard, Charlotte, Phoebe Jane and John. The sons, William, Isaac an d Rich ard were Confederate Soldiers.

Isaac Harrison McKaughan grew up in Stokes County on his father's farm. W hen he was 19 year s of age, he started for South Carolina for the purp ose of selling tobacco. He hired a team f rom his Uncle and bought a st ock of tobacco from N.D. Sullivan. As a tobacco peddler he did c onside rable business, and was in South Carolina until 1862. In the spring of t hat year he enr olled in the Clemons Company and was attached to the Se venth Confederate Regiment under Colon el Clayburn. He was subsequently t ransferred to the Sixteenth North Carolina Battalion. Thi s service too k him all over the great battlefields of Virginia, and while constantly o n dut y and ever ready for the hazards and fortune of a soldier's life, h e suffered neither sicknes s or wounds or capture and was with his comm and until the surrender at Appomattex. He and six teen of his commrades w ere able to retain their horses, and they rode home and were paroled a t G reenboro.

Bravely facing the conditions of life in a devastated country, he at on ce rented a tract of l and in Abbott's Creek Township and spent the spr ing and summer farming. The rest of the yea r he was again a tobacco sa lesman in South Carolina. In 1869 Mr. McKaughan bought a tract o f land i n Abbott's Creek Township and was

Steadily engaged in farming there until 1876. In that year he sold his f arm and moved to Kern ersville. He is first purchase of land there was f ifty acres close to the town, and in 1884 h e bought a lot in the villa ge and erected a commodious brick house, where he has since lived . Muc h of Mr McKaughan's prosperity in business was acquireds a tobacco sale sman, and for upw ards to forty years he made his annual trips to South C arolina. He continued to invest in lan d until he had upwards to 350 ac res and has financial independence that enables him to live a nd take l ife leisurely.

Mr McKaughan was married in 1864 to Esther Robertson. She was born five m iles south of Kerner sville October 6, 1939, daughter of William Haley a nd Mahala Robertson. They were happily mar ried for thirty-four years u ntil her death on May 20, 1898. In 1899, Mr. McKaughan married MA RY NE WTON PEGAM, a native of Guilford County and a daughter of John F. and N ancy Jones Pegam . Mr. McKaughan is an active member of Kernersville Me thodist Episcopal Church, south, and bo th his wives had also been memb ers of that society. He is affiliated with Norfleet Camp of th e Confed erate Veterans.

By his first marriage, he had six children: Miranda, Mary, David, Corne lius M., Arminius Harr ison, and Charles. Miranda is the wife of Robert E . Steele of Greenboro, Mary married Charle s Hester and their son Homer i s a dentist. David married Minnie Hooker; their seven childre n are Bes sie, Roy Hooker, Gates, Olivia, David and Esther. Cornelius by his seco nd marriage t o Leata Reed has a son, Robert Steele. Arminius married B etty Gentry and they have seven chil dren: Elah, Duke, Ralph, Donald, J ohn, Phyllis and Maxine. Charles married Nona Brown, and th eir three c hildren are William, Charles and Mary.
