Simeon Wetherell's company of Norton (list dated April 6, 1757). He served also in the Revolution in Capt. Lemuel Kellock's company, Col. John Smith's regiment, April 19, 1775. He or his son of the same name (of whom nothing is known) served in Capt. Samuel Fisher's company, Major Seth Bullard's regiment, 1780.

He located in Norton and was selectman of that town. Late in life he removed to Monson.

He and wife Anna (Metcalf) of Medway deeded to Abel Smith of Holliston land in Brimfield, Apr. 26, 1796 (H.D. 28-720) and to Joseph Partridge land at So. Brimfield, Mch 4, 1796 (H.D. 34-249). He was of Medway Apr. 6, 1791, and May 19, 1792 when he bought land at So. Brimfield of Daniel Wight of Shrewsbury. He was of Medway in 1790, as shown by the census, and in 1792 as shown by papers preserved by the family. He was of Medway, Apr. 30, 1789 when he bought land in Brimfield, 100 acres with house and barns of Elias Underwood (H.D. 29-406).

He lived for many years in Norton, MA removing finally, in 1764, to Peterborough, NH where he died, aged 77 years, 6 months, 10 days. His farm in Peterborough was north of the Gen. David Steele Place. In 1786 he exchanged that farm for the place subsequently occupied by him and his descendants.

He was a soldier in the French and Indian War, March 28 to April 26, 1759, in Col. Ephraim Leonard's regiment, enlisted for the Canada Invasion and delivered to Capt. Jonathan Eddy; also in Capt. Eddy's company till Nov. 28, 1760, 87 weeks, three days, serving at Fort Cumberland, whence he returned on the sloop "Prosperous", Capt. John Bragdon, as shown by the latter's bill dated Nov 24, 1760.

According to the census, he was a resident of Abington in 1790. According to his application for a pension, Apr 1, 1818, he was living then at Weymouth; enlisted June, 1775, in Capt. William Reed's company, Col. John Thomas's regiment; served to Jan 1, 1776, then re-enlisted under the same captain in Col. John Bailey's regiment and served a year and six weeks. Also enlisted May, 1780, and served 10 months as wagoner in Capt Mark Packard's company. Pension allowed (W. File, 15, 226). He was at the capture of Cornwallis.

John Puffer was originally buried at the Old Cemetery in Abington, ie., "Adams Street Burying Ground Site", that was found near the junction of Pearl and Birch Streets, North Abington . . . in the pine grove west of the track between Abington and North Abington. All burials here were removed to Mount Vernon Cemetery.

His name is recorded as one who voted Sept 3, 1822, and he was a taxpayer from 1822 to 1839, according to the town books. He lived at Hartwellville, a village of Readsboro, and his son Timothy succeeded to the homestead there. He came with the Carpenters from Monson. A native stone without inscription markes his grave in the cemetery on the hill at Readsboro. The school census of Readsboro shows that in 1822 he had two children still in school Dist. 2 and in 1824 he had three. He conveyed with privilege of the iron ore at Monson April 17, 1806 to Jonathan Wood, 55 1/2 acres. While at Medway June 6, 1796, he and wife Ursula deeded 41 acres on Mill Brook. So. Brimfield, MA, to Joseph Partridge (H.D. 36-658). He bought land at So. Brimfield, 41 acres on both sides of Mill Brook, of Geo. and Sarah Dodge of Ipswich, MA, D ec 7, 1791 (H.D. 31-47).

Samuel is put here with Benjamin and Abigail because he fits into the time period according to the earliest Federal Censuses. There is no proof he was their son.

This family has plagued me for years.  I have Samuel as son of Benjamin and Abigail Tucker because they are the only family that fit the time period and location for him.  He was unconnected to parents for years.  His 'parents' never appear in TN, so it is assumed he made the journey before 1820, where we first see him in the census records of Maury County, TN (Maury County TN Census, then the 1820 Fed Census).  I have a marriage date to Susan Eagan (to further confuse the issue she is clearly written as "Susan Agree" in the marriage records for Maury County (TN Marriages 1780-2002).  It's also curious that there is no record of the solemnizing of the marriage, just the license.  Were they ever married?  Who can tell.  It's possible that Samuel and Susan were never really married and had 3 children in as many years.  Something happened to cause them to split and Samuel married Elizabeth Duff and had Edwin and Susan. It's also possible that he was married to both (we're talking Tennessee here) :)


The Wilshier children: The 1860 Federal Census shows them living with John and Martha Gray Puffer.  It's unknown if they were adopted or were foster-children.  I've included them as a possible adoption after 1860.

He returned to Readsboro. For two years he kept a hotel at Whitingham, VT. It is said that he had gravestones made and inscribed for his father and mother, but never had them set, and they were finally lost. Perhaps a search of some of the old Puffer homesteads at Readsboro might discover them. He was highway surveyor in 1847; was living in school district 7 in 1851. The names of his children are given in the town census of 1851-53 and in the latter year the head of the family was described as "Mis" Puffer, indicating the father's death. Various deeds, mortgages and leases are recorded in which he was grantor or grantee.
