Af ter the war he moved to Montgomery, VT, being the first settler in that t own, and his family was the only one in the town for two years. He was s ubject to turns of the same kind of mental depression as his brother, C aleb, and also committed suicide.

    Officer in the Revolutionary War and friend with George Washington. Sg t Major of Col. Doolittle's regiment in MA, then appt. Captain. Moved to Greenfield, MA where he became a druggist. Representative of the General Court, 1797. He was subject to seasons of great mental depression, and in one of them, when about 60 years old, committed suicide.

    Notes:

    He was a carpenter, cabinet-maker and wheelwright. He lived at Sudbury, Lancaster and was at Alstead, NH in 1793. He sold lands in Lancaster to James Carter, Jr. (W.D. 145-609); W.D. 117-536). He was in the service for the War of 1812 and afterward in the United States army for many years. Served from May 15, 1812, to May 17, 1817. Another term of enlistment expired Aug 1, 1822, at Ft. Mickilmackinac, when he was in Michigan, and he remained there after he was mustered out. In his later years he received a pension. He deeded land Dec 18, 1792, at Sudbury to Samuel Puffer, Jr. (Gulp Neck) adjoining land of his mother (C. Nutt has original deed).
    He died at the home of John Graham at St. Ignace, MI, and was buried near there. He was a pensioner.

    When his mother remarried he took her maiden name as his middle name. There is some dispute about his being in CT.

    Notes:

    There is some confusion as to a 2nd marriage for Lucy. The Puffer Genealogy book doesn't show a marriage to Otis Stearns. It shows that she did marry a Coggswell with no children (Page 60).  No other marriages are shown for her.

    Another Lucy Wilder born 6 Feb 1792, to Joel and Lucy Wilder makes it all the more confusing.

    The case for her marriage to Otis Strearns isn't great.  And with another Lucy in the area with the same date minus the year, it is probably not this Lucy that married Otis Stearns.  Plus Lucy Wilder and Otis Stearns have a son named Joel Wilder Stearns, so that, to me, is pretty compelling it's this Lucy who is the wife of Otis Stearns.
