He was educated at the seminary at Lima, New York, and in 1858 began br eeding Durham cattle, becoming one of the most successful cattle seller s in America. In 1872, Markham became deeply involved in the American w ool industry, and was engaged with transactions involving American Meri no sheep around the world. He married Alice Josephine Foot (1845-1911) i n 1885.
