The 1920 Federal Census for Barre, VT shows her as being 'mulatto', with a white mother.
She was a student at the Brook Street School in Barre, VT at her mother's death. She was taken to the 'industrial school' in Barre, VT after the funeral.
When her father died a social worker for the poor, Miss Louise Gridley, visited the home and found there was no heat in the house due to lack of fuel, in below zero weather. No warm clothes were available either and were provided by Miss Gridley.
